Common Questions
What is a private commission at Home and the World?
A private commission is a bespoke piece made to your exact specification by the same heritage artisans who produce the ready-made collection. Rather than choosing from existing designs, you work with Home and the World’s curators to define the dimensions, materials, weaving tradition, colour palette, and any other parameters that matter to you. The resulting piece is made by hand in India — in Varanasi, Jaipur, Pochampally, or Bhuj depending on the craft — and exists only in the form you specified.
What types of pieces can be privately commissioned?
Any piece within Home and the World’s craft traditions can be commissioned: handwoven silk cushions in Gyasar, Tanchoi, or Ikat; custom silk table runners in non-standard lengths or widths; handloomed throws in specific dimensions or colourways; hand-carved amethyst or marble objects to specification; and brass or bronze decorative pieces. Commissions can also involve combining elements not available in the ready-made collection — a specific colour, a non-standard size, or a design adapted from an existing motif.
Can I specify exact dimensions, colours, and materials for a commission?
Yes. Dimension, colour, material, weaving tradition, and finishing are all specifiable within a commission. For textile pieces, colour is worked within the natural constraints of the silk dyeing process — some combinations and saturations are achievable and others are not, and the consultation stage is where this is discussed honestly. For stone and metal pieces, the material’s natural properties set the outer limits of what is possible. The consultation exists to align what you want with what the craft can produce.
Is a private commission a good option for a unique housewarming or wedding gift?
Yes — and it is the highest expression of that intention. A commissioned piece made to the dimensions of a specific room, in the colour palette of a specific home, or to an agreed design is a gift that cannot be replicated or found elsewhere by definition. For a housewarming gift for someone whose home you know well, or a wedding gift for a couple whose taste and space you understand, a commission allows the gift to fit precisely rather than approximately. The artisans, the technique, and the provenance are identical to the ready-made collection.
What is the process for placing a private commission?
The process begins with a consultation — a conversation about what you want, the craft tradition best suited to achieve it, realistic timelines, and pricing. From there, if both parties agree to proceed, the commission is formalised and production begins with the relevant artisan partner in India. Updates are provided through the production process. The consultation can be initiated through the commission inquiry form on this page.
How long does a commissioned piece take?
Production timelines depend on the craft, the complexity of the specification, and the current workload of the relevant artisan. Handwoven textile commissions typically take between 6 and 14 weeks from the point of agreement to delivery. Stone and metal commissions vary depending on material availability and the complexity of the carving or casting. Timelines are discussed and confirmed during the consultation before any commitment is made.
What is the minimum order for a private commission?
There is no fixed minimum quantity — single-piece commissions are accepted. The consultation stage is where the scope, timeline, and pricing of any commission are established, whether for a single bespoke piece or a larger order for corporate or event gifting purposes.
Is a commissioned piece more expensive than the ready-made collection?
Generally yes — a commission involves additional design consultation, production planning, and the specific sourcing of materials to a particular specification. The degree of premium depends on the complexity of what is being commissioned. Standard sizing and colourways from existing craft traditions fall at the lower end of the premium range. Entirely novel specifications involving non-standard materials or techniques fall higher. Pricing is discussed transparently during the consultation.
Does the same free shipping and duties policy apply to commissioned pieces?
Yes. Commissioned pieces ship free to the United States and Canada with all duties and customs fees included — the same policy as the ready-made collection. The final delivered price is confirmed during the consultation and does not change at delivery.
