Preserving Heirlooms, Honoring Materials
CERAMICS
Why care matters: Glazes breathe; thermal shock causes micro-fractures.
- Washing: Hand-clean with mild soap + soft sponge. Dishwasher is not recommended (high-pressure jets degrade glaze over time).
- Storage: Place cloth/tissue between stacked pieces. Avoid hanging handles.
TERRACOTTA & EARTHENWARE
Why care matters: Porous clay absorbs moisture, leading to cracking or mold.
- Washing: Hand-rinse immediately after use. Never soak. Use tamarind paste for deep stains (traditional method).
- Drying: Air-dry upside down in sunlight (UV naturally sanitizes).
- Avoid: Microwaves/dishwashers (thermal shock); Storing liquids >2 hours (wicks into clay).
- Seasoning: New pieces? Rub interior with coconut oil; bake at 300°F for 30 mins (creates water barrier).
WOOD (Serving Boards, Bowls)
Why care matters: Wood "lives"—expanding/contracting with humidity.
- Cleaning: Wipe with damp cloth + mild soap. Never submerge.
- Oiling: Monthly, apply food-safe beeswax or coconut oil. Buff with cloth.
- Stain Removal: Salt + lemon scrub, then re-oil.
- Storage: Keep away from heat vents. Store upright with air circulation.
- Reviving: Graying? Light sand with 220-grit paper; re-oil.
BRASS & BRONZE
Why care matters: Patina is protective; over-polishing wears metal thin.
- Traditional: Scrub with tamarind (imli) paste or lemon + baking soda.
- Modern: Handwash with mild soap + soft sponge. Always dry immediately.
- Restoring Shine: Polish with vinegar-salt paste (1:2 ratio), then rinse thoroughly.
TEXTILES (Linen, Cotton, Banana Fiber)
Why care matters: Natural fibers weaken when wet; dyes fade in sun.
- Washing: Hand wash gently in cool water or dry clean if recommended.
- Drying: Lay flat on towel. Never tumble dry. Avoid direct sunlight.
- Ironing: While damp on medium heat. Embrace crinkles as "textured elegance."
- Storage: Fold loosely in breathable cotton bags. Avoid plastic (traps moisture).
NATURAL FIBERS (Banana, Seagrass, Raffia)
Why care matters: Plant fibers fray when wet; humidity causes mold.
- Cleaning: Spot clean only with dry brush or damp cloth.
- Drying: Blot spills instantly; air-dry away from heat.
- Storage: Keep in dry, ventilated space. Insert napkins/paper to retain shape.
- Reviving: Frayed edge? Dab with clear fabric glue.
GLASS & ENAMELWARE
Why care matters: Enamel chips; glass scratches.
- Washing: Hand-wash with non-abrasive sponge. Avoid metal utensils.
- Stains: Soak in vinegar-water (1:1) overnight.
- Chips: Small enamel chips? Sand gently with nail file; seal with food-safe epoxy.
A Note from Our Artisans
"These materials have memory. Clay recalls the potter’s thumbprint. Brass holds the heat of the furnace. Linen remembers the loom. Care for them as companions to your life’s moments—and they’ll reward you with decades of beauty."
