Hollowed by Hand: Courage Meets Geometry in Volatile Stone

Carving a vessel from amethyst demands near-alchemical skill. Our Jaipur artisans begin with solid blocks of violet quartz, drilling and hollowing interiors by hand to a 40ml capacity — a days-long process where one wrong stroke could fracture the entire form.

Each 2.5" glass emerges with walls thin enough to reveal the stone’s violet translucency, yet thick enough to defy its brittle nature. These are not just shot glasses; they’re miniature monuments to human tenacity, echoing the ancient Greek goblets carved with the belief that amethyst tempers wine’s fervor. The ancient Greek word amethystos means ‘not drunken'.

Preserving Your Hand-Hollowed Amethyst Vessels

DO:

  • Rest before pouring: Let glasses sit at room temperature 10 minutes before adding liquid.
  • Clean gently with a soft cloth, tepid water, and mild soap (focus on interiors).
  • Dry immediately with a clean cloth.
  • Store in provided padded pouches to protect polished surfaces.

DON’T:

  • Expose to thermal shock (sudden hot/cold changes).
  • Pour chilled spirits or hot liquids directly into the glass.
  • Use abrasive scrubbers, harsh chemicals, dishwashers, or ultrasonic cleaners.
  • Soak in water, subject to steam, or place in microwaves/ovens.
  • Clink glasses together or against hard surfaces as this can cause chipping or breaking.

NOTE:

Minor variations in translucency, veining, or natural fissures are nature’s signature—not flaws. With care, your shot glasses will deepen in character over time, developing a soft patina from cherished use. Like all true heirlooms, they grow more beautiful with story.

Hollowing amethyst requires patience. Allow 2–3 weeks for:

  1. Stone Stabilization: 7-day rest to minimize internal stress fractures.
  2. Calibrated Hollowing: 3 days drilling to 50ml ±0.5ml tolerance.
  3. Luminescent Polishing: 12-hour hand-finishing of interior walls.
